I went to Juliana Hatfield’s book reading/performance tonight and it was seriously awkward. There were maybe 20-30 people maximum which gave the event a decidedly creepy vibe, especially since at least 10 were men alone in their 40s, taking pictures every second. Most likely they were trying to cling to the time in the mid 90s when they were in college and listening to The Lemonheads and Blake Babies.
Ultimately I’m glad I went and met a person who takes up an incredibly sizeable portion of my music collection (probably 3rd place) but what I really left with was the reality that “selling out” or “being popular” are really things people should stop worrying about. I was immensely sad at how small the crowd was for Juliana tonight after all the time she’s put into music and all the great records she’s made. There’s nothing wrong with being recognized for your art.
I agree! And this makes me sad for Juliana Hatfield.
