oh world,
i wish job listings would give the actual salary number. when it comes down to it, no matter how interesting the job could be, you need to know how much you’re going to get paid, and whether the job is even worth investing time into applying.
im so sick of seeing “competitive.” first of all, that doesnt really fucking mean anything, and second of all, every job listing says “competitive” after “salary:” so it means even less than whatever it orginally intended. you’re obviously not going to say “salary: we dont pay well at all,” even though that’s what i end up finally learning after i’ve filled out your goddamn annoying internet application, re-tailored my cover letter, and suffered through a phone interview of ridiculous hypothetical scenarios. i am so frustrated!
Could not agree more. I remember a gajillion years ago, I was working at an Internet company that helped people find jobs, and they told us that we couldn’t know everyone else’s salary because then it would be “like a union” and that would be bad because with a union, everyone gets the same raises! Ummmmmm… ooookay. I was too dumb at the time to recognize the fallacies of that argument. All I know is, if everyone knew what everyone else was making, people would be a lot less exploited. (And/or a lot more jealous.)
