The Monster Milers: Our primary mission is to connect Philadelphia runners with homeless dogs as running companions. We provide ongoing support for PAWS (Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society) through sponsored adoption events and running adventures for the homeless dogs as they wait for their forever homes.
Why are you running shelter dogs?
Because it’s fun! And it’s great for the dogs. Even at the best urban rescue centers, dogs end up spending a lot of time isolated in small rooms. That’s not how a dog is meant to live! Getting the dogs out for a run helps to take the edge off of shelter life. Shelters can be high-stress environments for dogs and running is a great stress-reliever. Running helps combat “cage craziness.” You know, when dogs get so antsy from boredom that when they see a human they go crazy? This happens often at shelters and people think, “Surely, I can’t adopt that dog, she’s insane.” What they don’t realize is that dog has just sat in a small room for 23.5 hours of the day. Of course she’s crazy! Running helps take that edge off and helps to get the dogs adopted quicker. Really - it works. Becoming a Monster Miler also helps to free up time for the Adoption Center Staff to do other important things. If we can handle exercising the dogs, they can focus on finding them homes!
This is really cool.
