The far side of journalism; article as curated comment section. This is like the sad, logical culmination of the “reporting” I used to do for another women’s magazine. One time they sent me a packet of fashion trends—skinny jeans! plaid! (this was awhile ago)—and I walked around asking guys to look at the pictures and they had to tell me whether they thought the trends were hot, or something. It wasn’t exactly deep thinking or world-changing journalism. But at least I was actually talking to real people! In person! The other thing is, I wonder if that job even exists anymore. Why would it? Now they can get an intern to send out an email like this one, directing guys to go to a Survey Monkey survey and rate the “looks.” More responses, undoubtedly, and faster too. What happens when the outsourcers get outsourced? We don’t care. The end.
