“[T]hey’re saying sun for tomorrow, but I think that’s just a ruse to keep us all from surrendering to the depressing inevitability of this meaningless life and taking the appropriate countermeasures.” —Balk.

Neverending Winter

I have been feeling kinda glum the last few days and I think it’s mostly weather-related — because this has happened enough times that I know to realize this is how I get at the end of February every year, when it’s been cold and dark for ages and all I do is crave carbs and feel pasty and fat, and that it will, eventually, end, as everything does — so I made a playlist called “Neverending Winter” of some songs I have been liking lately.

You can download it and you should also know that most of the songs are not, in fact, depressing.

Tracklisting (in alphabetical order):

“Bizness,” tUne-yArDs
“Blue Skies Again,” Jessica Lea Mayfield
“Cradle,” Joy Formidable
“Dogs Eyes,” Wye Oak
“Helplessness Blues,” Fleet Foxes
“I Promise You,” La Sera
“Kiss That Grrrl,” Kate Nash
“Lights,” Ellie Goulding
“Put the Days Away,” Sun Airway
“Satellite,” The Kills
“Shell Games,” Bright Eyes

“The fact that there is hypocrisy in feminist criticism — and more maddeningly, that there are knots having to do with beauty, sexuality, comedy, respect, desirability, power and representation that will simply not come cleanly undone no matter how sharp a nail we take to them — does not mean that the criticism is invalid, or that we should stop worrying the knots, or that our struggles on both fronts should be exempt from mockery. Jezebel does publish smart feminist content at the same time it publishes snarky items that might appear in more traditional women’s magazines. So does Salon. Tina Fey has made huge, feminist strides for women in comedy at the same time that she has made comedy at the expense of women. Such is life when you attempt — as we all should! — to bring gender criticism out of the pure ether of sociopolitical discourse and attempt to deploy it in the real, messy world of commerce, consumption and popular culture.” —

Rebecca Traister, “30 Rock” takes on feminist hypocrisy — and its own

Yes.

“The idea that men will be turned off by ambition or success is just another part of the big lie. It is meant to scare you and keep you from questioning the system. The only men who are turned off by ambition and success are men that are insecure about their own talents and success or lack thereof. You don’t really want to know those guys anyway, because they suck and they will constantly attempt to undermine you, and even if you are secure enough in yourself not to care it’s still really fucking annoying. Everyone feels like the worst awkward looking junior high version of themselves at times and has conflicted feelings about whatever demographic they usually date. The best thing you can do is team up to fight all the lame assholes of both genders.” —

In Which We Teach You How To Be A Woman In Any Boys’ Club - Home - This Recording

This whole essay is so, so, so spot-on (please read the whole thing!); I have previously declared my love and admiration and borderline obsession with Molly Lambert and let me just PUT IT ON THE RECORD AGAIN. She just gets it, in such a major way.

“You could go up to a girl you’re into and be like, “Wanna bang on my yacht? You can make your shitty art while I fuck around on Beatmaker afterwards.” Pleeeease, please, please do that. Or, I don’t know, next time you’re indulging one of your eclectic interests at some very specific event be like, “Oh I see you also like Italian futurist films of the early 20th century,” or whatever kind of things you’re used to talking about. Approach artsy girls the same way you’d approach any other kind of girl, is all I’m saying. You’ve got a bunch of neat stuff to talk about! Music, literature, film, that time a bunch of you jerked off on a cookie and fed it to each other, etc. Very confident and comfortable with yourself! You’re doing great! Wait, are you ugly? Is that it? I can’t tell from here, but even if you ARE ugly, don’t sweat it — plenty of funny-looking dudes bag super hot artsy chicks. Life is funny that way! #life #Brooklyn” —

Gonna start a new Tumblr a la Slaughterhouse 90210 but for nail polish. It shall be called Infinite Essie.

Preview Six Songs From Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' | Rolling Stone Music → rollingstone.com

perpetua:

Yesterday I got to hear four songs from Lady Gaga’s upcoming album Born This Way, and today I wrote about them for Rolling Stone. They were all varying degrees of awesome. “Edge of Glory” was amaaazing. Fun fact: Within 40 seconds of that song coming on, Gaga burst into the room doing air guitar moves. It’s just that kind of song.
