Urgh.
I hate getting defensive. Especially on Tumblr! But seriously… sometimes… people…
Jessica just pointed out that perhaps the economy has people on edge. I mean, I am certainly on edge.
WTF is up with Rachel Maddow's makeup
It looks like she was wearing a sleep mask in a tanning booth—her face is literally two different colors.
URGENT REMINDER
Hey you! Yeah, you over there with the sad face. You probably just lost your entire 401K, but cheer up! Tonight’s the premiere (11pm) of Man and Wife, the new MTV dating advice show my friend Niharika (and katiebakes’ friend Harriet!) worked on. Set your DVRs!
I DISLIKE reading articles that include the political opinions of actors,...

Yes, it’s a Tumblr. Obvs.
Oh yeah...
Forgot to mention! The Crier (the wonderful, fabulous, dearly departed literary magazine I used to edit) is rising from the dead for one night only, because Todd Zuniga of Opium Magazine asked us to participate in his Literary Crawl thing tonight.
What does this mean for you? Well, I’m reading at the El Beit cafe in Williamsburg, on Bedford Ave. between N. 8th and N. 9th, at 8:30pm, and...
Love this.

The journey to this poignant, uneven movie, through a succession of worse and better ones, began in Cleveland Heights, a comfortable suburb of Cleveland, where Paul was born in 1925. He was the second son of Arthur S. Newman, a prosperous Jewish partner in a sporting-goods store, and Theresa Fetzer, a Hungarian-descended Catholic. By the time Paul and his brother Arthur, now 58, a film...
Why no ladies liveblogging the debate on Gawker, hmm?
Genius!
The best thing about the iTunes Genius thing is that it’s discovering music that I love that I didn’t realize I had. Whee!
I’d send The Great Schlep to my grandparents in Boca, except they don’t have Internet access.
On "accountability"
From the Washington Post:
McCain said five principles must be included: greater accountability and independent oversight; a path for taxpayers to recoup the money; transparency in decisions on which companies to help; a cap on the executive pay of those companies that take part and no earmarks in the plan for any specific businesses.
I love that when Republicans talk about regulation,...

Doree - I love everything you write so don’t take this wrong, but this is silly. None of the things you listed are in any way preconditions for a “utopian new era of ‘creativity.’” Especially not the late and very unlamented smoking in bars (cough, cough, barf, barf — though anyone who really misses that is encouraged to check out Jersey, Houston, Cincinatti, or any other place...
Today's Paper, Today
Irina and I worked together on this CRASH VIRGINS piece about people who are going through their first economic crash. I don’t think that we’re in for the Great Creative Renaissance of 2008, but you know that’s just cynical old me.
Anyway, here’s an excerpt:
Of course, that’s a story that’s been years in the making; the disappearance of Lehman Brothers and the conversion...
Time capsule
On January 30, 2006 I backed up my iPod onto an external hard drive, and for the past couple years—and one iPod and one iPhone later—I’ve sort of cobbled together my iTunes through old CDs and new stuff. But I never managed to transfer the stuff from my old iPod onto my computer, or onto any new device. Until tonight!
It was like stepping into my musical mind circa 2004- 2006....
Weirdness
Soon after I posted the Scoop and alpaca stuff, some random person IMed me saying that I should be careful what I post on my blog anyone can read the Internet and what if her son saw.
So… either this lady is a racist or she hates alpacas. TAKE YOUR PICK.

So! My very dear friend Niharika, who is an amazing film editress, has been working for the past few weeks on a NEW MTV SHOW ZOMG called Man and Wife, featuring the Hot 97 DJ Scoop and his lovely wife Shonda. This is the trailer.
Doree, that’s too funny - my friend Harriet has been working on this too!! It’s like Love Line but 23589350 times better, as I understand it....

My review of the new Candace Bushnell book is up. Here’s an excerpt:
But the new breed of youngsters intent on highlighting the hypocrisy of their elders is meaner and, well, snarkier than their forebears, Ms. Bushnell implies. Their number is led by a smarmy 20-something named Thayer Core, who lives in a tiny East Village walk-up and yet feels qualified to lob his verbal grenades at the...

Day 3 of wisdom tooth recovery (I had them out on Thursday afternoon): Swelling on the left side of my face has gone down, though it’s still noticeable (Sam: “If someone had never met you, they’d just think you had chubby cheeks!” Uh, yeah, lopsided chubby cheeks!), and the left side of my jaw still hurts. The right side is pretty much fine, probably because a) they only...

iPhone update appears to be working. But why does my phone ding all the time when there’s nothing to ding about?
Rachael Ray interviewed by the NYT:
We often hear parents say, “My kid would never eat that!” Were you ever a picky eater as a kid?
My mother always gave us whatever she was eating. I think if you expose children to all the colors and the aromas and the experience of cooking, it becomes an innate thing for them from the time they’re very small. They’ll develop an ability in the kitchen and a...

Yay iPhone 2.1 Software Update
Disclaimer! I have not yet actually TRIED this update, but it’s promising very wonderful things! Such as (these are copied from the update):
- decrease in call set-up failures and call drops
- significantly improved battery life for most users
- dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
- improved email reliability, notably fetching from POP and Exchange accounts
- faster...
Now That's Good Government!
SIKE! As we used to say in third grade. Anyway, from the Post, re: Marty Connor, who just lost to 28-year-old Dan Squadron in a race for a State Senate seat Connor had held for 30 years:
The long-serving Democrat, whose last day in office is Dec. 31, began tossing files and paperwork from all over his office, sources said.
He also canned his chief of staff, telling him he was “done”...
Last night’s episode was more Mad Women, wouldn’t you say?
From that same story:
“My goodness. I’ve been in the business 35 years, and these are the most extraordinary events I‘ve ever seen,” said Peter G. Peterson, co-founder of the private equity firm the Blackstone Group, who was head of Lehman in the 1970s and a secretary of commerce in the Nixon administration.
Then Waspy McWasperson drank a gin and tonic and went to sleep, secure in the notion...
